Who is a magnetic car sign worth it for?
A magnetic sign is ideal when a car is used sometimes for business, sometimes privately, or when the advertising should only be on it for a certain time. Typical examples:
- tradespeople, caretakers and gardeners who drive to customers in their own car
- home care and nursing services whose staff use their own cars
- couriers, pizza and delivery services with changing vehicles
- estate agents, insurance and field sales staff
- promotions, trade fairs, openings and election campaigns for a limited time
- leased and company cars on which nothing should be stuck permanently
If the vehicle is used solely for the business, permanent vehicle lettering in vinyl is usually the better choice: it can be larger, looks more professional, cannot be stolen and needs no daily care.
Will a magnetic sign fit my car? The fridge magnet test
A magnetic sign only sticks to steel panels. Many cars now have doors, bonnets or tailgates made of aluminium or plastic – no magnet will hold there. So check every spot where the sign should go with a simple fridge magnet first.
The sign also needs as flat and continuous a surface as possible:
- not over swage lines, edges, trim strips, door handles or gaps between two panels
- not on strongly curved wings or wheel arches
- not on glass or plastic bumpers
Measure the flat area on your door with a tape measure and choose the size so that about 2 cm of space remains all round. On panel vans and small vans, large sizes up to 100 × 60 cm often fit too.

How to keep the magnetic sign secure – and protect the paintwork
- Apply clean and dry: clean the paintwork and the back of the magnet first. Sand or dirt underneath reduces adhesion and can scratch the paint.
- Lay it down fully: place the sign against one edge and smooth it on so that no air remains underneath.
- Remove it regularly: take it off at least once a week, wipe the paintwork and the back and let them dry. Moisture trapped for long periods can damage the paint.
- Remove it before the car wash – otherwise the brushes will tear it off.
- No fresh paint: after a respray, wait a few weeks until the paint has fully cured.
- Check at high speed: before longer motorway journeys, check that the sign lies flat over its whole surface.
Store the sign lying flat or on a metal surface, such as a steel door in the garage – not bent and not in blazing sun in the boot.
Design: what belongs on a car sign?
In traffic, a car sign is only seen briefly. What works: company name or logo large, below it what you do in one word («Plumbing», «Gardening», «Home care») and a phone number or website at least 4 cm high. A QR code works mainly on parked cars – in the designer you create it with one click. Frequently asked questions
Does a magnetic sign stay on at motorway speed?
On a flat steel surface, clean and fully applied, the 0.9 mm magnetic sheet holds even at higher speeds. Still check before longer journeys that the edges are lying flat.
Why won’t my magnetic sign stick?
Usually the spot is aluminium or plastic, or the sign is sitting over a swage line or edge. Test the area with a fridge magnet and choose a flat spot on steel.
Does a magnetic sign damage the car’s paintwork?
Not if you remove it regularly, clean the paintwork and the back and let them dry. Damage is mainly caused by dirt and moisture trapped underneath for weeks.
Can I go through the car wash with a magnetic sign?
No, take the sign off before the car wash. The brushes can tear it off.
Which is better: magnetic sign or vehicle lettering?
The magnetic sign is ideal for cars that are also used privately, or for temporary advertising. For pure business vehicles, permanent vehicle lettering is larger, longer-lasting and theft-proof.
