A wall decal from folie.ch is a quote, name or motif in matt wall vinyl that looks as if it were painted on and can later be removed again without leaving residue. You design it online from CHF 25.–, from 1 piece, in sizes from 60 × 30 cm to 150 × 80 cm or a custom size up to 300 × 150 cm, with a preview on your wall colour. We cut it in our own workshop in Wallisellen and deliver across Switzerland.

Where does a wall decal work best?
A wall decal adds personality to a bare wall with little effort – no painting and no marks when you move out. Popular uses:
- Living room and kitchen: favourite quote, family name, coordinates of your home town, a recipe line above the dining table.
- Children’s room: the child’s name above the bed, a height chart, animal motifs.
- Office and meeting room: company values, mission statement or logo behind reception – as in the «Gemeinsam weiter.» example.
- Practice and therapy: calming quotes in the waiting room, signs to the treatment rooms.
- Shop, café, hairdresser, gym: slogan, menu line, Wi-Fi note, social media handle.
What size should my wall decal be?
A wall decal looks best when it takes up about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it – so around 120 cm wide above a 180 cm sofa. The standard sizes as a guide:

Tip: mark out the planned area on the wall with masking tape first, or print the quote on a few A4 sheets. That way you can see straight away whether the size is right. The size always refers to the overall area of your design (width × height).
Which walls does a wall decal stick to?
A wall decal needs a smooth, clean and sound surface. It holds best on walls painted with emulsion paint, smooth plaster, wood, glass, tiles and lacquered furniture.
- Difficult: coarse textured or rough plaster, heavily textured wallpaper, chalky lime and silicate paints, damp cellar walls.
- Freshly painted? Wait a few weeks until the paint has completely dried through.
- Tape test: stick a strip of masking tape on for a day and pull it off. If paint comes away with it, the surface is too weak for a wall decal.
Which wall colour, which vinyl colour?
In the designer you can preview your design on four wall colours: white, beige, light grey and anthracite. Rule of thumb for good contrast: dark vinyl on light walls, light vinyl on anthracite or other dark colours. The matt surface doesn’t reflect, so it looks painted on even in raking light.
A wall decal is single-colour and has no background – only the letters or outlines go on the wall. If you want a colour photo or a multi-coloured logo on the wall, ask us via the contact form about a solution with printed vinyl.
Applying a wall decal – step by step
- Dust the wall, wipe it with a damp cloth if needed and let it dry – no cleaning agents containing grease or silicone.
- Align the wall decal with a spirit level and fix it along the top with masking tape.
- For large designs, work from the centre: peel off the backing paper section by section and press the vinyl on with the squeegee from the inside outwards.
- Peel off the application tape slowly and flat along the wall, not outwards away from it.
- Press all edges on again with your thumb or a soft cloth.
A squeegee and printed instructions come in the fitting kit for CHF 6. It sticks best at room temperature.
Removing it again – even in a rented flat
The wall decal vinyl can be removed again without leaving residue. Peel it off slowly and flat along the wall, not straight out from it. With older wall decals it helps to warm the vinyl slightly with a hairdryer. On very weak or chalky paintwork, the paint may still come away – which is why the tape test is worth doing before you apply it.

Is a wall decal suitable for rented flats?
Yes, the matt wall vinyl can be removed from intact paintwork without leaving residue. Do the tape test first, especially with older paint.
Does a wall decal stick to woodchip wallpaper or rough plaster?
It holds best on a smooth surface. On coarse textured plaster or heavily textured wallpaper, the vinyl only adheres to the peaks and may come loose.
How large can a wall decal be?
Custom sizes up to 300 × 150 cm. For larger walls, a design can be split into several parts.

Can I also apply a wall decal to glass or furniture?
Yes, the vinyl holds very well on smooth surfaces such as glass, tiles or lacquered furniture. For shop windows and outdoor surfaces, vinyl lettering is the more robust choice.
