What is Alu-Dibond – and why is it the standard material for company signs?
Alu-Dibond (the generic term is aluminium composite panel) consists of two thin aluminium outer layers with a plastic core in between. This build makes the 3 mm panel light, torsion-resistant and rust-free. Unlike plain aluminium sheet it doesn’t dent so easily, and unlike plastic boards it hardly warps, even on a sunny south-facing facade.
That’s why Alu-Dibond is the go-to material for anything that hangs outdoors for years: company signs at the entrance, information and parking signs, yard and directional signs, construction site signs and house numbers. The print goes directly onto the panel, with no applied vinyl that could peel at the edges. With weatherproof printing, a sign like this typically lasts several years outdoors.
White or brushed aluminium – which surface should you choose?
| Alu-Dibond white | Alu-Dibond brushed | |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | bright, clear, colours really pop | elegant, metallic, understated |
| Unprinted areas | pure white | visible aluminium surface with a fine brushed finish |
| Ideal for | colourful logos, information signs, construction site signs, photos | company signs for accountants, architects, agencies, house numbers |
| Design tip | background colour freely selectable | dark lettering (black, navy, dark green) works best |
Brushed aluminium costs a little more but looks particularly high-end, especially with stainless steel spacers. If your logo has lots of light or pastel colours, the white panel is usually the better choice, because otherwise the contrast on metal is too weak.
What size does a company sign need to be?
For a company sign next to the entrance door, 400 × 300 mm is usually enough; if it needs to be read from the street, 600 × 400 mm or more makes sense. The standard formats and their typical uses:
- 300 × 200 mm – information sign, parking sign, practice or office sign in the stairwell
- 400 × 300 mm – classic company sign at the entrance
- 600 × 400 mm – company sign on the facade, driveway entrance
- 800 × 600 mm and 1000 × 700 mm – facade sign, workshop and warehouse
- 1500 × 1000 mm – construction site sign, property sign, information board
If none of these fits, enter your own size in millimetres in the designer – for example the exact width between two windows. Besides square corners, you can choose rounded corners, round (for a logo sign, say) and oval.
How is the sign mounted?
There are three mounting options for Alu-Dibond, which you add directly in the designer:
- 4 drill holes Ø 5 mm (+CHF 6) – for screwing to a wall, wood or a post. Screws with colour-matched cover caps give the neatest finish.
- 4 stainless steel spacers (+CHF 29) – the sign «floats» at a distance from the wall. The most popular solution for company signs at the entrance.
- Adhesive pads (+CHF 5) – for smooth, load-bearing surfaces such as glass, metal or painted doors. On rough render or clinker brick, adhesive pads don’t hold reliably.
With drill holes and spacers, leave a margin of about 2 cm all round without important content, so that screws don’t cover anything. Choose wall plugs to suit the wall (concrete, brick, wood, external insulation).
Artwork tips for a sharp sign
- Upload your logo as an SVG if possible – vectors stay pin-sharp at any size. With JPG or PNG, the file should have enough pixels to reach around 150 dpi at final size (so about 3500 pixels for a width of 600 mm).
- You can remove a white background from your logo with one click using AI background removal.
- On a company sign, make your phone number and website large rather than listing everything: name, what you do, one contact.
- A QR code to your website or booking calendar can be created in the designer; print it at least 3 × 3 cm.
We check every file before printing and get in touch if anything looks blurry or cut off.
Do I need a permit for a company sign?
That depends on the municipality: many Swiss municipalities require an application for advertising and company signs on a facade, especially for larger or illuminated signs or those in a historic centre zone. Small signs right at the entrance are often exempt. If in doubt, ask your local building authority, and for rented premises get the property management’s consent before you order.

Frequently asked questions
How long does an Alu-Dibond sign last outdoors?
With weatherproof UV printing, an Alu-Dibond sign typically lasts several years outdoors. The panel itself doesn’t rust and hardly warps.
How thick is the Alu-Dibond sign?
The panel is 3 mm thick: two aluminium layers with a plastic core. That’s rigid enough for formats up to 1.5 m and still easy to mount.
Can I order a round Alu-Dibond sign?
Yes, Alu-Dibond is available square-cornered, with rounded corners, round and oval. You choose the shape in the designer.
What’s the difference from an acrylic glass sign?
Alu-Dibond is robust and made for outdoors, while acrylic glass with its 5 mm glass look is more elegant and mainly used indoors. For a practice sign in the stairwell, acrylic is a good fit; for the facade, Alu-Dibond.
Is there a discount if I order several signs?
Yes, for identical signs in one order line: 5 % off from 5 pieces, 10 % from 10 pieces and 15 % from 25 pieces – handy for matching information or branch signs.
Can you print a construction site sign for me?
Yes. Construction site signs are possible on Alu-Dibond up to 3000 × 1500 mm. For an affordable temporary solution, a PVC banner on the site fence also works well.
